Critically endangered species!
The mountain bongo is the largest forest subspecies of antelope. It is characterised by a striking chestnut red coat with white stripes and long, spirally twisted horns that are characteristic of both sexes. This species is native to the mountain forests of Central Africa, especially Kenya, and has adapted to life in dense undergrowth, where its colouration serves as effective camouflage. The mountain bongo feeds on leaves, shoots and fruits, as well as flowers and bark.
Unfortunately, the mountain bongo is now one of the most endangered large mammals in the world, with an estimated population of only 100 individuals living in the wild. The main causes of their endangerment are loss of natural habitat, poaching, human expansion, and disease. The mountain Bongo is particularly sensitive to interference with its natural environment, which leads to its rapid decline in numbers.
Safari Park Dvůr Králové
With over a hundred successfully reared individuals, Safari Park Dvůr Králové has become a major player in global efforts to save this beautiful species. Caring for bongos here includes not only providing optimal conditions for their captive breeding, but also participating in international programmes for their reintroduction into the wild. Research and conservation programmes carried out by the zoo in cooperation with other institutions and conservation organisations focus on studying the biology of bongos, protecting their natural habitat and raising awareness of the need to protect them.
And because at Bonghemia we love bongos almost as much as we love cannabis, we've decided to support Zoo Dvůr Králové in their efforts. What's more, we want to involve our community in this.
